Last month I shared that I’m going to talk about what I’ve learned over the last few years of trying to live a more sustainable life and take better care of the planet. I plan to talk about products I’ve tried and didn’t like, what’s worked, and little ways to change your mindset.
I’m nowhere near perfect. No one is, of course, so you can think of these as little ideas to chew on. And maybe, over time, you’ll notice a few small changes add up to a big difference.
Today: reusable shopping bags
Some of you may live in places like California, where plastic bags at the grocery store are outlawed. Maybe you’ve already switched to reusable bags and are a faithful tote-carrier. If so, yay!
If not, have no fear. I used to think it would be impossible to get into the habit of remembering to put bags in the car, then remembering to take the bags into the store. But I promised myself I would try and that I wouldn’t get frustrated with myself if I forgot.
Guess what? I found that after about a month or so, it was second nature.
Last week, with a trip to the dog park and cleaning out the trunk and forgetting to put the grocery bags back in, I arrived at the store without them. I wanted to cry because I didn’t have my emotional support totes and had to use paper bags at checkout.
I didn’t, in fact, break down in tears in the parking lot. But it made me realize how routine it’s become. Friends, if I, a mom of four who is quickly running out of mental RAM, can do this, so can you.

That’s all for today! In a few weeks I’ll share about my “moody mermaid beach novel” that I wrote faster than any other story.
Happy shopping (with your reusable totes)!
Love, Heidi
